The Music Department

Head of Department = Mrs C Hague

The Music department has one multi-purpose classroom with access to a variety of instruments and a suite of Mac’s with the latest sequencing and composing software. We also have a practice room where learners can receive instrumental and vocal lessons from visiting staff. The department aims to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as a musician and to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Learners in KS3 are assessed each half term on a variety of topics. There is a strong focus on practical skills throughout KS3, building in the key skills required for success at KS4. The curriculum is broad and covers many different genres of music and a variety of skills in order to fully prepare learners for KS4 if they choose to take Music.

In KS4, learners will study BTEC Music. This course has a 1 hour written exam, with the remainder of the course assessing their practical skills in three units of coursework.

Learners in KS3 will be assessed half termly to assess their progress against one of the three main skills in music - Performing, composing and listening and appraising. Learners in KS4 will be assessed at the end of the teaching section of each coursework unit and again at the end of the unit.

Home Learning

Learners are expected to complete homework in KS3. Specific deadlines will be given to learners in lessons and the Independent practice at home will link to in class learning. In KS4, students will be given practical homework each week, where they must fill in a performance log to evidence this. They will also be issued with written homework linking to the exam unit of the course.

Afterschool Sessions

Singing Group, Guitar club, Keyboard club and String group all run once a week after school for all learners led by Mrs Hague. There is also the opportunity for learners to use the practice room to develop their skills independently or in small groups.

Enrichment Opportunities

Throughout the year a variety of enrichment opportunities take place. Notably we have the Christmas Concert which is held in December and the Big Sing event which is held in July.
