The Science Department
Head of Department - Miss S Monaghan
Context
The science department consists of six specialist teachers and one full time science technician. The department has 6 laboratories and classrooms. The department has a united focus on learners achieving their personal best and developing a love for learning.
Curriculum
Learners in all year groups are working towards GCSE exams with the AQA exam board. These learners will be assessed on the number grade 1-9 system. There is still a strong focus on practical skills and learners will be assessed on their knowledge of practical skills through their GCSE exam papers.
The Triple Science course is offered as an option for key stage 4, which would be of particular advantage to those planning to continue with the Sciences at key stage 5. All other learners will work towards a combined award worth 2 GCSE’s.
Assessment
Learners will complete a short assessment throughout their topics and complete a 1-hour exam to assess their progress against all assessment objectives (demonstrate knowledge and understanding, apply knowledge and understanding, analyse information and ideas), during the school year. Learners in Year 10 and 11 will be assessed on the number grade 9-1 system, against their individual targets using topic examination questions, topic tests and GCSE exam papers.
Enrichment Opportunities
Throughout the year a variety of enrichment opportunities take place. This year the Science Department are planning a trip to the Natural History and Science Museum in London. Competitions and special sessions will also take place throughout the course of the academic year linked to key events, such as British Science Week.
